Plasma is defined as the fourth state of matter and gets generated by compressing and ionizing a gas in case of cutting applications. The different gases used, include nitrogen, nitrogen-oxygen mixtures or even compressed air, which is the cheapest and easiest to obtain. The arc is usually of two states, that is, a transferred arc, when electricity flows to the parts to be cut, and pilot or non - transferred arc, when the electricity passes only between the electrode and nozzle. There is a lot of heat present in the plasma, such that, as soon as the arc is transferred to the work, material is instantly fused and sublimated. The pressurize gas removes the fused material, giving a narrow, precision cut.

Plasma cutting technique can be used with all electrically conductive materials and is considered perfect for stainless steel, copper and aluminum, on which oxyacetylene flames give ineffective solutions. The immense concentration of the arc gives highly narrow and accurate cuts and low heat transfer allows the cutting of even thin sheet without thermal deformation. Pilot arc striking can be achieved either  by an H. F. high voltage discharge, as in TIG welding, or by mechanically separating the electrode and nozzle. The power of the cutting machine usually determines the cutting capacity.
